Ya know, the fiance visa allows a 90 day TEST PERIOD before you have to get married. If you have kown her for a while, apply for the fiance visa, try living together for 90 days and if evergthing is ok, get married. If either of you change your mind, she can always go back to Colombia, no questions asked.

Is there not some type of student visa where you could simply have her attend and English language school?

Hi JD,

Funding it would proably be a fairly inexpensive way of finding out if the girl you are interested in will fit in.
I guess not only does she need to be comfortable with her potential partner but also with his friends and other relatives.

There is also the slight issue that the potential partner will not really like the new country as in the same way McDonalds menu boards display a fairly distorted picture of the size of their burgers Hollywood movies paint a fairly distorted picture of the USA.

Mal,

Right off the bat, it's a bad idea....these fact finding trips don't do dick.

Once they're married and settled in they usually unravel on you...

Just go there have fun, learn the culture...but to go wife shopping like some yo'yo's do around here and in other countries...buyer beware.

Ya know, I just don´t understand some of this. Either a person has a PRETTY GOOD IDEA how they feel about someone or they don´t.

If someone is considering marriage, then they should be close enough to a decision that the 90 day period would tilt the scales one way or another with any remaining doubt.

I just get the feeling that some people are looking for visa alternatives because they only want to SHACK UP and not commit to marriage. If that is the case, just get a GRINGA girlfriend.

Ok guys i haven't been here in a long time mostly because I work like crazy and I obviously been to Colombia at least 20 times since I started this thread. I am still with the same girl and things have been better than ever. I just became a us citizen so we are ready to take the next step. I AMA little nervous because I read somewhere that I have to be a us citizen 3 years before we can get a k1 visa, any truth to this?

I would find it incredulous that once getting a US Citizenship there are any stipulations on it other than your oath and the US Constitution. I suppose if there is they will blame Obama.

Congrats on the relationship and all the other positive things you have going.

I mean honestly, I would wait at least a year before proposing marriage. I dont think six months is enough time to get to know someone in a romantic sense especially in a long distance relationship. There's no need to rush it. The best route you can go is to apply for a tourist visa. Colombians do not qualify for the lottery.

If she's single between 18-40...her chances of getting a tourist visa is next to impossible.
i do nt know about that I know so many 18 and 19 single woman who get tourist visas, on the other hand every male that has applied in that age group have been denied.

If a tourist visa or student visa don't work out you can explore a worker's visa if she has any skills that qualify and you can get a business owner to employ her. They just have to sponsor her here.

Then, once she is here you can sometime down the road apply for a change of status and begin the green card/marriage process.

No promise of any of these ways working but they all are worth further investigation. Just my .02 cents.
